Global Warming

It's been in the 50s and 60s the past few days in DC. I even ran in shorts a couple times last week. Just looked at the temperature in Duluth: 20 degrees. Cold. Maybe you guys should come to DC for some spring training.

Long runs are back in style

I just got back from my first long run. One hour and forty one minutes. About fourteen miles. This marathon training is going to be difficult.

What gives

I went for my usual run yesterday. I was tired on the run and today I am sore. Strange. I wonder if the slippery roads were part of the cause. Regardless, I'm guessing the remedy is eat meat and repeat.

DC Meat Week

A great post to follow Ben's concerns about low body fat. Next week is Meat Week in DC. In addition to offering a week's worth of BBQ, the group has one of the best logos I have ever seen. According to the WaPo, "Meat Week organizers recently penned a 'BBQ carol' titled 'The Eight Nights of Meat Week' — six briskets smoking, eight porks a-pulling..." I am going to try and talk a few friends into going, perhaps to eat ribs that are cooked by the famous 'Mr. P.' in an old converted school bus.

Body fat

As a part of its health services program for employees, the county has a little clinic where you can go to get advice and measure progress. I was not aware of this until one of my coworkers bet that three of us skinny folks in the office probably have less body fat combined than he does. Now I'm intrigued. I haven't gone yet but I plan to go this week or next.

Running buddy

I have run with Roscoe the past two weekends. Each run was followed by brunch. Church!

No Posts

No new posts in over a week. I fear that I may be the only one running this marathon.

Sage Advice from Jimmy

Not every day is a sunny day. Some days you're the pigeon. Some days you're the statue.

I saw this at Jimmy Johns today.

California, Cal-i-forn-ya runnin'

Ran 5 miles on the beach at low tide in Los Angeles last evening just before sunset. Felt pretty good after two days ago accidentally running 13.1 miles when I meant to go 7 or 8 (longest run in 5+ years). For the last stretch on the beach I took off my shoes and ran barefoot in the hard sand, which was nice. Then we headed to a dive restaurant called The Shack and ordered The Shack Burger with fries and beer. The Shack Burger is a hamburger patty topped with lettuce, onion, tomato and a Louisiana sausage cut length-wise. This is what is called post-run full caloric replacement plus. I'm well-fed for a run in Seattle tonight.

It has begun

This week marks the beginning of the Jack Daniels plan. I ran four days this week. I finished my run today before the sun had risen. It's really not as impressive as it sounds because the sun doesn't rise until almost eight. But it is Saturday. If I can motivate myself to roll out of bed and run on Saturday mornings, I figure it will be nice to have free time during Levi's nap and a little more rest time before Sunday's run, which will be dedicated workouts and long runs.

This is awesome

Matt Gabrielson posted this on Facebook two days ago. Make it hurt Matt! Go Team Minnesota!

This would make our video look like Best in Show or A Mighty Wind. Except we wouldn't be mocking. We would be serious. Seriously slow.

Minnesota Celebrity Sightings

About two weeks ago I was running home from the capitol: down Summit, down Fairmount, and down St. Clair. I popped out onto river road behind two fit runners. One was Jason Lehmkuhle. This was very exciting. I don't think elite runners realize they are celebrities. Today I was running home from work past the U of M when a speedy runner shot out onto river road in front of me and then disappeared in the distance. He eventually turned around and headed back in my direction. It was Hassan Mead. Sweet.
